Legalization of marijuana is a very controversial issue around the world and especially in the United States of America. Marijuana has been declared as a harmful plant that is thought to be nothing more than causing more problems in today’s society. However, it has been proven to outweigh its negatives with numerous other positives. By legalizing marijuana, crime may be reduced, prison spaces can open up and medical patients can be helped, and these are only a few of the benefits.
Relating marijuana (illegal) to other legal drug such as alcohol, “nearly 32% of total traffic deaths are caused of drunk driving involving a driver with illegal blood alcohol content.”(NCSA) There has been no overdose of marijuana reports. Harm from marijuana was never the cause of death. “In 2008, 16 percent of child (age 14 and younger) traffic fatalities occurred in alcohol-impaired driving crashes.”(NHTSA)

Another reason why marijuana should be legalized is because of the medical benefits it may have. Some symptoms that medical marijuana can help with are: “sever nausea/vomiting with cancer chemotherapy; cachexia associated with AIDS or cancer; spasticity secondary to neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis” (Kleber & Dupont).
There are already some great examples of medicines made from marijuana like “Sativex, a standardized marijuana-based product delivered by means of oromucosal spray.” (Kleber & Dupont). This product “is currently being evaluated in a phase 3 trial for cancer pain in the United States.” (Kleber & Dupont).
