To legalize or to not legalize marijuana? That is the question. Marijuana is also known as Cannabis. Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Cannabis is often consumed for its psychoactive and physiological effects. These can include euphoria, relaxation, and an increase in appetite. Possible side-effects include a decrease in short-term memory, dry mouth, impaired motor skills, reddening of the eyes, and feelings of paranoia or anxiety. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the world even though it is illegal. The majority of individuals who use it smoke it as a cigarette or through a pipe of some sort. One of the least common ways is to mix it with food or in tea.

People are now unemployed and the job market is also decreasing. This loss, however, creates more growers, regulators, and sellers. This is because when using marijuana is legal, the demand for it will be higher than ever. Though some may see this as a pro, I see it as a con because there should always be a law banning drugs like this. There should be more growers of agriculture and food rather than growers of marijuana. There is also talk of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes only. I believe that this would be beneficial as long as it is regulated in the correct way, meaning that the drug should only be given to people who really need it. For extremely ill individuals, medical marijuana is the only medicine that can alleviate pain. Marijuana has been shown to alleviate symptoms of many medical conditions, such as cancer, AIDS, and glaucoma (Drug Policy Alliance).
