Here at BYU, I think it’s safe to say that the majority of students and faculty are conservatives, or at least leaning in that direction. I too consider myself to be conservative. Planned Parenthood is notoriously bad among many conservatives, and consequently, they made up most of who voted to defund Planned Parenthood. Instead of just voting for what those around us do or voting simply how we were raised, we need to do our own research. Planned Parenthood helps women prevent pregnancy, detect cancer early, and educate the public. Whether or not you love Planned Parenthood, you should at least first understand what it is and what services they provide.

In fact, they are the world’s leading provider of birth control. Planned Parenthood subsidizes the birth control, making it more affordable to the lower class. This is especially important because statistically, the lower class has the highest percentage of unwanted pregnancies. Planned Parenthood also teaches pregnancy prevention through education. They teach about abstinence, safe sex, and how to protect against STDs. As their website states, Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest provider of sex education (Planned).
As a teen, “Maria” was unable to ask her mom if she could go and see a gynecologist. She was raised in a strong Catholic family and people of that faith consider birth control to be “sinful and immoral” because it may frustrate a divine plan of bringing a new life to this world (Birth). So Maria decided to go to Planned Parenthood to get birth control. With Planned Parenthood, she was able to prevent any pregnancies. This helped her graduate college, have a career, and get her master’s degree. Maria says in The Huffington Post, “I am the only woman in my family who did not have a child under 20 years old”
