Plant-Based Diets: Can They Heal the World? A plant-based diet is said to be a healthier and more ethical lifestyle that will perform wonders. Supposedly, it can end world hunger, save the lives of animals, decline the rates of obesity and other diet-related diseases, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and put an end to deforestation. Are these claims valid? Can we safely assume there will be health and environmental progress if the world supports plant-based diets? Are they sustainable? Are they a good option for everyone? Should we urge the population to support this? Can plant-based diets worldwide help to health the planet? These are some of the questions I will be addressing.

We need fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and questionably, meat and dairy products. Some people, vegetarians and vegan, choose to live a life void of animal products for their health, or simply to remove a sense of guilt. Though, I question whether it is the right option for everyone. I am aware that reducing the percent of livestock production is essential for a recovering environment, but is it right to force this lifestyle upon many? I say no. Though it is well known that a life full of meat consumption is unhealthy, being completely deprived of it would not be great for some people. Some struggle with digestive irregularity, vitamin deficiency, and depression from vegan or vegetarian diets. For these people, vegetarianism is not the best option and they must consume a healthy amount of meat. The answer to that: food is our medicine and we need to take advantage of it without exploiting it. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, had a valid point even though this phrase has become a cliche and over quoted. Food does need to be our medicine to heal ourselves and the Earth. And though a plant-based diet is not right for everyone, it is highly recommended by various physicians and scientists to preserve the Earth and improve our quality of life. Food is what fuels us and the rest of the world that we share. Paying respect to the Earth, which supplies us our fuel, is the first step to a greater future of health and
