Introduction What if I told you, at the end 10-12 years that you would be tested on your job performance. Your managers give you positive feedback, they always state how wonderful it is to have you as an associate, and they appreciate how you work independently with little guidance. What if a test would determine the amount of money you have already earned would be taken away if you did not pass? Our students face this same threat beginning in 3rd grade and it will continue until they are seniors in high school. The threat has a pretty name, presented with all the bows and ribbons anyone can imagine, I am talking about state testing. This program evaluates a student’s knowledge starting in the third grade and has the weight to determine if a child should or should not move on to the next grade. I ask what about all the test and assignments throughout the year, do they not matter? How can we say this test is fair? Our teachers provide each student with the same learning experience, opportunities for deeper understanding, and classroom or home assignments. This is fair, each student holding within their hand the ability to pass or fail, not a test that throws a year of hard work aside like day old bread. The OSTP contaminates the privacy of students with a public display of each individual school grade. Although the school test is per student the outcome impacts the entire school. The letter grade given regardless good or bad is used to validate the work of the teacher and student, our children should have the freedom to go to school without the world watching. The OSTP extinguishes the desire and passion of our students with a learning disability. Teachers provide lessons for students that are comprehensive, while helping build confidence in their own ability to learn. Let us consider the students, their rights to learn, and our commitment to stand when they are
