Did you know something you use on a daily basis could possibly kill you? Texting while driving is very dangerous and in order to stay safe, drivers should remain off their phones. Some reasons not to text while driving are texting while driving lead to car accidents, people could get injured or killed, or you could have increased insurance rates, excessive fines, and tickets.
The first issue with texting and driving is that it can lead to car accidents. Phones divert our attention from the road and in the article, The Science Behind Distracted Driving, “the visual, the manual, and the cognitive distraction significantly increase the crash risk”. If you were to get into an accident, especially due to texting and driving, your insurance rates would go up. In the article, The Science Behind Distracted Driving, “Thirty-nine-states have banned texting while driving.” ( The Science Behind; p.139) This means that if you are caught texting and driving in one of those thirty-nine states, you could be fined a pretty penny. In the article, Cellphones and driving: As dangerous as we think?, “There issome evidence suggesting state and local bans have caused some drivers to talk less while on the road.” This use of authority has worked in the fact that it gets drivers to talk less because drivers know the they will have to pay fines. Not only do drivers have to worry about texting and driving fines, but in the case they do get in an accident, they also have to worry about increased insurance rates.
