Every year car accidents, fatal and nonfatal, are recorded by the hundreds. Police find cars in the ditch, in the median, or sometimes even in the rivers or ponds afar. How many of these accidents are due to an impairment of any classification? In 2011, a cellphone was ancillary to 23% of all auto collisions (“Texting While Driving”). Although cell phones are a necessity in the present time, they can also be treacherous while driving. Cell phones are a negative matter to driving because drivers become impaired, numerous deaths are claimed by texting, and millions of dollars are spent in repair to accidents.
Although driving impaired is commonly called drunk driving, texting&driving is also a deterrent to the driver. As an illustration, at the speed of 60mph, a car can travel the length of a football in just 5 seconds. It takes approximately five seconds to check a text message, according to U.S. Senator Greg Walden (Har). This fact is nothing short of startling. The fear of death is present in 68% of the U.S. population as of 2016 (Seth). Of the calculated 55.3 million deaths in the world, 1.3 million are caused by car-related accidents (Birth & Death Rates, Road Crash Statistics). Coupled with these facts, the use of a cell phone claims, a low yet still effective, 23% of lives (Texting While Driving). Even though this number seems small, it still affects more than the life taken. Continuing, the driver who was texting will live with the guilt that they have taken the life of an innocent individual. Along with the driver, the victim's family will have the empty void in their hearts for the remainder of their life, not to mention, their friends and co-workers.
