Most of us agree that texting while driving is dangerous, but how many of us actually refrain from the temptation to answer a text message when we’re behind the wheel? This ongoing issue ultimately ties in with the following core functions of public health practice: “assessment and monitoring of the health of communities and populations at risk to identify health problems and priorities”, as well as “formulating public policies, in collaboration with community and government leaders, designed to solve identified local and national health problems and priorities”. Reduction in accidents due to texting and driving could prevent injuries and deaths from motor vehicle crashes, as well as lowering medical costs to treat crash-related injuries. According to the information gathered from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in 2016, text-messaging ban has been imposed in 46 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands for all drivers; therefore, texting while driving is now illegal in most states.
