Texting and driving is extremely dangerous and should have a serious consequence because it kills thousands of people, costs lots of money in damage, and puts millions of people at risk. I think that texting and driving should have a more serious consequence. Currently in California, it is a $20 fine for first offense. The second or subsequent offense increases to a $50 fine.
I think that texting and driving should require an either bigger fine or some jail time. A $20-50 fine is not a lot. Most people could easily give up $20 and go back to texting and driving. If they had to pay a couple hundred or thousand dollars, they most likely would stop texting and driving. If they had to serve some jail time, they would almost certainly stop texting while driving.

For starters, paying attention to the road and to other drivers will reduce your chances of an accident at least a little bit. Do not drive while intoxicated, obviously. Keep your seat belt on at all times. But the reason for the most car accidents is distracted driving. Distracted driving includes talking on a cell phone, eating, or sending a text message. All of those can be easily prevented. Don’t talk on the phone, and if you do, use bluetooth instead of using your hand to hold the phone up to your head.
