According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, texting and driving is equivalent to driving after having four beers. Texting while driving is also the cause for 11 teen deaths daily. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Fatality Facts). Those who continue to text and drive are becoming a serious social problem and those texting and driving are becoming an even bigger risk to drivers across the world. Data indicates that texting while driving increases a driver’s crash risk by twenty-three times, which is similar to the risk of a crash when a driver has a blood alcohol level of 0.19. In order to eliminate or start reducing this massive issue, we as a society need to do a better job of making the consequences of texting and driving more severe and better known.
There are far too many people losing their lives because another driver is too busy texting to operate their 2,000 pound machine going 60 miles an hour on the highway. I understand that car accidents happen and slight accidents happened if someone stops short and you bump into them. However, if you were to imagine the force and impact of that who was rear-ended by someone who is texting, their response time is delayed in stopping their vehicle because they were so distracted.
