Dear Principal Cornwell, recess is a valuable asset to the school day and it is your job to ensure that the kids at BHMS have access to a good recess. Every year middle schools lose their creativity and their free time every school day. But if there was more of a recess, you could gain more creativity, responsibility, and character. Recess is good for kids. Research shows that the kids need at least 60 min of exercise daily and recess will help you do that. We’d like an extra 30 min. of recess. So we are asking for your help for a longer period. Studies have shown that in all of the schools that have cut recess, the school academic rating levels have dropped dramatically. Recess can also be a bad thing because fights can happen and people can start to roam free. But if we had more recess, then there would be no reason for the bad stuff to happen because there is more time and more space. So if there are people they don’t like, they could go somewhere else because there is more recess. According to Brock University researchers “If children are offered something to do during recess from making bracelets to Zumba, skipping ropes to Frisbees, chalk drawings to hula hoops run by older students trained to swap the law-of-the-jungle culture for the message that everyone is welcome, kids will indeed get more exercise, feel more engaged and sharpen their skills at getting along”. pg2 Recess will give kids a better attitude toward the teachers, staff, and other kids. It will improve their grades. Recess can provide kids with perfect attendance because they look forward to seeing each other and playing with one another. Recess makes kids less fidgety and kids will pay more attention. After all, they can’t wait to go to recess because they know that if they don’t do their work, they will not be able to attend recess. On the other hand, more recess can lead to more fights at school. It could cause kids to be left out, but the people that don't like each other have more time and more space to stay away from one another. If kids get left out of games that they want to play, then people can say let's have a structured recess. For example, one group of people could be playing basketball and another group of people could be playing soccer, then you just alternate so that no one is left out. There are so many reasons why unstructured recess is good for students Unstructured leads to better responsibility Letting a kid choose how he treats nature so he can control his actions (Cohen 7). It gets kids physically active in recess and does more than burn off stress; it stimulates neurological activity; it gives kids a personal insight and it lets kids meet other kids they don't
