Why Do Students Need Recess

“ For some children, recess is the only area of the school day in which they really excel…. If you take that away, you really are hurting the child.” Think about a little elementary kid who has recess as their favorite part of the day, and then they hear the devastating news that they are moving into 6th grade and don’t have recess. How heartbreaking is that? We can avoid this heartbreak by fighting for recess. One of the reasons why we need recess is our brains need a break at sometime during the day. Recess also fights obesity. We middle schoolers need to fight for recess so that we could get a brain break for our brains to settle.

School without a brain break is like sitting in a prison cell for 8 hours with no sunlight or fresh air. To solve all these problems we could get our recess back. Children need breaks between classes or recess because the study shows that many kids focus better …show more content…

But research shows that violence only accounts for 2% of behaviors during recess(Pellegrini). Teachers are worried about behavior outside but research has showed that “compared to those who have minimal or no recess time, elementary school children who have free time during the day receive higher ratings from teachers on their classroom behavior(Harvard).” the same thing would apply to middle schoolers. If middle schoolers get recess they would be less cranky and theirs brains would be freshened.

Overall middle schoolers deserve recess. They need brain breaks and they would be less rude and less disruptive to the class because they their energy out. Teachers could benefit from fresh air too because they need a break from the screen and the students. Another reason would be less obese students since they got to exercise during recess.
