Looking on the Pike High School website, I noticed you had a position open for a High School English teacher, and I am intreated in applying. I am a fourth-year student at Indiana University who is majoring in Secondary Education with a focus in English and a licenses addition for Teaching English Language Learners. I will be licensed in Secondary English Education and Teaching English Language Learners this coming Spring. One student, I worked with had an auditory processing disorder which caused her to confuse her sentence structure while writing. Through targeted intervention and dedicated skill-based instruction, I helped her write fluent grade level appropriate sentences. Furthermore, I designed and implemented a lesson at Schmidt Elementary school’s summer program that was effective and engaging for students grades six through ten and English language levels ranging from beginner to advanced. One last key experience I would like to highlight was my work with the Boys and Girls club as well as Northwestern Middle School where I increased low SES students’ engagement with literature by connecting academic texts to their lives and concerns.
