The release of two atomic bombs on Japan helped end World War II but launched the start of the Cold War. The policy of containment is the foreign policy of the United States and its allies to prevent the spread of communism. George F. Kennan proposed this law to oppose Soviet expansion following World War II, it is known as “The Source of Soviet Conduct”. There were so many countries that were communist during World War II and it affected so many Americans and they weren’t wanting communists taking over the U.S. Government. After World War II, Japan lost and Korea was divided into two parts. North Korea was a communist based country and South Korea was a non-communist based country. They were divided just like Germany was in 1945. North Korea is supported by the Soviet Union and China, both communist countries. South Korea was supported by the United States which was a non-communist country. Both North and South Korea want complete control of both countries. The division of Korea between North and South Korea occurred after World War II, ending the empire of Japan’s 35-year rule over Korea. The U.S. was on a secret mission after the creation of the Berlin Wall, their mission was to fly over and photograph denied territory from the U2 spy plane. The U.S. wanted to see if they had any nuclear weapons on any of their military bases. The U.S. needed to see what they were up against if war broke out, and so they could prepare. The USSR captured Powers, and the USSR stated that he confessed to being on a spying mission. Gary Powers was supposed to use the cyanide pin and was to self-destruct the plane to prevent taking captive. He didn’t go through with the plan and was put in jail.
