HNES 400 Reflection Paper As we know, there are potential barriers and preconceived notions throughout the healthcare field. These kinds of negative factors and mindsets can tear a healthcare team apart, disrupting quality care for patients. However, there are ways to combat these challenges through important skills like finding methods to effectively resolve potential barriers, challenging the negative mindsets surrounding preconceived notions, and adopting good communication styles and applying effective team communication tools and techniques. When on a healthcare team, it is important to recognize that there are potential barriers to interprofessional collaboration. Some of these barriers include fears relating to professional identity, hierarchy, and poor communication. One example of a preconceived notion that I had at the beginning of the semester was that nurses were only caregivers in the way that their roles and responsibilities are to make sure the patients are clean, comfortable, and happy. In actuality, nurses must know so much information that I did not realize they had to, such as the extent of medications. Another preconceived notion that I had when I was younger was that pharmacists only counted pills and put them in a bottle to give to patients. Now I know that that belief is limiting and incorrect. By working closely with future pharmacists, I was proven wrong and exposed to the impressive knowledge that those students possess. It seems as if there is a pattern that these notions oversimplify the education, knowledge, roles, and responsibilities of the profession, which can be frustrating and counterproductive for those who are in
