Diana was often worshiped by young women who would sacrifice their hair to her before they married. She was originally known as Diviana which means to shine. She is the daughter of Jupiter and Latona, as well as twin sister of Apollo. Diana was worshiped on August 13 at a festival called Nemoralia. This was also known as the festival of torches. Worshippers of Diana would line up around the Lacus Nemorensis, a sacred lake near Aricia. This was also known as Diana’s Mirror. She was also the mothered Jupiter’s children, Apollo and Diana. Latona was the daughter of Polus and Phoebe, who were from the first dynasty of the titan gods. She had no brothers but she did have a sister named Asteria. Although the union between Latona and Jupiter produced her twins not everyone was happy about it. Latona was said to be beautiful and Jupiter loved her and their children, but Juno was not thrilled by the idea. Juno was enraged and jealous of Latona. As a result of this she sent a serpent to terrorize and torment Latona everywhere she went. To keep her and their children safe Jupiter took them to the island of Delos. He thought of visiting his brothers but decided he did not care much for their company at the time. He also thought of spending time with his wife Juno, but realised that she was busy with her upcoming festival. Jupiter even considered spending time with the other gods but they all feared him and his well known temper. After coming to a dead end Jupiter decided to watch things going on in Rome. He saw two men in the street and made them start fighting while he laughed at them. As he laughed something caught his eye. It was Io, a river nymph. Captivated by her beauty Jupiter made a thick mass of clouds from earth to heaven and brought Io up to visit him. Juno saw the clouds and became suspicious and went to question Jupiter. When Jupiter caught sight of Juno he quickly turned Io into a cow and stood there waiting for his wife innocently. Juno was not fooled. She asked Jupiter for the cow as a present and sent it away with guards. Jupiter panicked and sent his son apollo to put the guard to sleep and release Io back in the river, but Apollo forgot to turn her back into a human. When Juno heard of the escape she sent a fly that bites after Io. Io jumped into the river to escape the fly but struggled to swim as a cow. Distraught Io decided to go to Egypt. When Juno discovered this she flew to Egypt and changed Io back to her original form and told her to find a husband. Relieved and happy Io swam the entire
