The United States ranks 17th in an assessment of the education system of 50 countries, but ranks first in the armed forces (Gayathri). It does not make sense, Why, How? The United States should be compelled to be in the top five in the education system. They should be competing with Finland, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. Everyone has a different idea about school but most people think for a better life, people must work hard in school. Some people may get lucky and make something people love. They might become millionaires but that is never a guarantee. Just like people look and dress in different ways why does the education system not provide that to the students. Why do we go to school? Most students ask that same question and the answer is simple. To learn what people don't know, no one is perfect. Education can help a person develop, but not without hard work and dedication. Everyone has a strong point and a weak point. The United States and Japan have very different education systems, each with its pros and cons. Jim Stigler was a student at the University of Michigan when he went to Japan to research teaching methods. An observation done in Japan in a 4th grade class showed clearly how they are different. The teacher was teaching the class how to draw three-dimensional cubes on paper and one kid was having a hard time. His cube looked all crooked and the teacher said, “Why don't you go put yours on the board?” He chose the student that could not do it, weird right (Spiegel)? That is weird for the students in United States, but in Japan it is ordinary. They ask the students’ that are struggling to go in front of the whole class and show them what you are having trouble with. After they have attempt after attempt and put in the hard work they either get the answer or gave it their all. They keep trying and do not stop. The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation stated, “Only one in four high school students graduate ready for college in all four core subjects.” This should definitely not be happening in the United States because they are one of the top countries. Why would this be happening in the United States? Ken Robinson answers that question by saying, “Doing what they did in the Past.” The system that is being used now was created and designed for a different age (Robinson). The education system gives a mindset that if a person does not have academic abilities a person would not be successful, therefore many think why go to school if they are not going to be victorious. It lowers their self-esteem. Robinson states, “Education is modeled on the interests of industrialization and in the image of it.” The schools are like a factory, “organized on factory lines, ringing bells, separate facilities [and] separate subjects (Robinson).” The one phrase that was appealing was when he stated “ We still educate children by batches.” The system separates the students from ages. Why do people think everyone is the same? Students mature at different ages and are more capable of retaining the information given to them. This needs to change in order for the students to thrive and they along with that the United States will become even
