The Common Core State Standards believes that it successfully prepares students’ academic careers to enter college and businesses with clear guidelines to decent test scores. However, with the lack of flexibility and creativity, there is always a limitation that students can learn from the scripted lessons. Although scripted lessons can ensure student’s academic achievements, students learn more from their experiences like projects that require creativity. Consequently, the educators must consider that an individual has different learning styles and different paces of learning. Thus, the teacher’s job is to discover individual’s strength and weaknesses and help them to walk through the right path and not only to stuff one’s head with knowledge
Common core standards should be taught in the dominant way to solve the problem first, and when the majority of the students understand the concept, other complex ways to solve the problem can be taught from a variety of choices to choose from. This process is time consuming, but it is a guaranteed way to increase the child’s brain level of understanding, since they are at an age that is still under developed and have trouble solving challenging
No one ever said school was easy. It takes quite a bit of hard work and preparation from both the students and teachers. All within a school year there are different homework, assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, presentations and much more to try and fit into an already busy course schedule. To add to that the Education Reform Law of 1993 was introduced to schools, which required that all public school students have to be tested in the subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology Engineering. Those set of tests are called Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and they are meant to measure students performance based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework.
Florida standards outline what should be taught and at what grade level to ensure that all students have access to quality education, preparing them to be college ready. With clear standards in place and redefined leadership roles that foster teacher growth, teachers have the opportunity to increase their expertise and make a greater impact in the classroom. When students are exposed to positive learning environments, in which effective techniques motivate them to learn, achievement levels increase. As one can see, there is a clear relationship between academic standards, effective instruction, and student performance. Academic Standards Adopted in 2010 and fully implemented during the 2014-2015 school year, the Common Core State Standards fundamentally changed the education system.
The implementation of the Common Core State standard, a set of national education standards, has been widely criticized, debated, and contestable the biggest educational shift in rigorous and presentation of the new assessments. These standards were nationally adopted, to challenge top students academically. There are many pros and cons that has been examined, however, I have decided to point out a few that interest me the most. The State Standards are internationally benchmarked, which allow data and scores to be compared to that of other countries. This helps aide the improving implantations.
It was discovered that in education there were certain areas that were universal and common among learning. The two main subjects of concern were English language arts and mathematics. Common core is the new curriculum implemented now in school systems to develop learning. Common Core Standards are a clear set of shared goals and expectations for the knowledge and skills students need in English language arts and mathematics at each grade level so they can be prepared to succeed in college, career, and life. Although, Common Core seems to be here to stay this article addresses concerns in reference to content, instruction, and assessment.
Common Core State Standards is causing schools and teachers to be less creative in the classroom. Common Core State Standards focuses more on teaching to a test instead of teaching to learn. While there are some benefits to teaching to a test, it is not good when the only goal of learning is to take a test. Students
Common Core is a widely debated topic here in America. However I feel like it shouldn't be because it violates one of our Bill of Rights, the 10th Amendment to be exact “the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the states Respectively, or to the people.” (10th Amendment in the Constitution) Therefore, it’s the individual rights of the states to decide if they want to use Common Core. But, I do feel like it's useless.
Common Core has unfounded negative connotations. Society does not like change and Common Core calls for change. The reality is Common Core changes the way our children learn material and better prepares them for college and a future career. Alexandra Petri laments “70 percent of high school seniors’ reading assignments be nonfiction” (CITE). This is not an unattainable or irrational goal for those preparing to enter college level courses or the workforce.
o Child Left Behind be repealed? The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is an Act of Congress that is the government’s main aid program for students that have disadvantages. Its intention is to give equal opportunities to all youths for a good education and future. It was passed during George W. Bush’s presidency, in January 8th, 2002.
The Accommodating Standard Several students around the United States, such as myself, believe that “Common Core Standards” sole purpose is to demolish happiness in its entirety. Fortunately, now I have come to see “Common Core”, not as my enemy, but as my ally. Several administrators and parents fight repeatedly over what they believe should be taught in their schools and what shouldn’t in order to protect beliefs within the household. One cannot discuss the infamous”Common Core”, without asking oneself who should be in control. Who should be allowed to mandate what children all over America are being taught, and what is without exception unacceptable.
Some people agree that there are pros and cons with state standards, however to me, I feel like state standards prevent teachers from expanding their teaching horizons. Some pros towards standards and assessment-based education system are building upon current thinking and preparing students for success in college, career, and life, and supporting students through decisions in school. Some cons about having state standards for schools are that teachers have to at least meet up to those state standards. Not everyone can meet the state standards because they are set at high expectations. Many teachers have students who come from different backgrounds and have different learning levels.
Common Core and standards-based teaching and learning are ways to ensure the on-track and level progression of students. States implementing Common Core are teaching students of the same grade level, the same material. Across the US, first graders are following a similar curriculum map! This is a powerful tool for teacher and student alike. Although Common Core and standards-based teaching and learning pushes students academically, I am able to recognize it is in their best interest!
