Why GoGuardian is Awful and Should Not Be Used Do you think GoGuardian has been a help? If you’re like 83% of students, you probably said no, and for a good reason (ChecelDer). GoGuardian is a web filter meant to increase productivity in school but has only succeeded in doing the opposite. By autoblocking, the use of blocking specific links or phrases regardless of their relevance (Vicks), GoGuardian has become an online overlord in the lives of students. GoGuardian should not be used because it is unnecessary and gives students a massive invasion of privacy. GoGuardian is highly unnecessary in many ways. Its main purpose is to meet CIPA (Child Internet Protection Act) requirements, but it over pushes those boundaries to an extreme (Anderson). …show more content…

In a recent study by the ChecelDer Independent Research Foundation, it was found that many students’ biggest worry was “GoGuardian spying on me/accessing camera” and “The fact that teachers can activate your cameras from outside of school.” GoGuardian has access to students’ webcams, which can be accessed while students are off campus, and many students and teachers aren’t even aware of this. GoGuardian can also change and access your browsing history, and make edits to your digital footprint which you didn’t leave (Anderson). This is a gargantuan issue in the minds of students right now and can lead to unnecessary anxiety and stress (Anderson). Also, teachers use GoGuardian outside of school hours. According to a study conducted by the CDT (Center for Democracy and Technology), “81 percent of teachers who responded to the survey say their schools use student activity monitoring software and of these teachers, one in four say that monitoring is limited to school hours” (McCrea 4). This shows that over 60% of teachers abuse GoGuardian and use it after hours and do not give their students proper privacy. If teachers use GoGuardian after hours, they have the power to access webcams and other privacy-invading features while the students are out of
