Organ transplantation is the process of transplanting organs between two organisms. It has been an idea for thousands of years, but has only become a reality within the last 200 years. It first showed up in stories and as ideas from philosophers, but now we have the technology and knowledge to actually perform these operations. This process of organ transplantation has begun with just ideas and experimentation. As more people explored this process and it was actually attempted by many people, it gradually became safer. Now it is a common procedure and they take place every day. In modern times they can transplant almost every organ. Compared to when it first began when they could only …show more content…

The survivability of transplantation has greatly increased as these procedures have been performed more often. Modern equipment has helped make it a lot easier to do these procedures. ("Information about Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation", n.d.)
Almost all of the organs in the human body can be transplanted such as the heart, lungs, pancreas, brain, cornea, hands, skin, feet, legs, arms, bones, bone marrow, stem cells, blood, kidney, liver, and many more. All of these organs have different procedures and risks. There are specific types of surgeons for each type of organ. Each of these has a high survivability rate, but they can vary depending on the patient’s health. ("Understanding Donation", n.d.)
There is a waiting list for organ transplantation. There is no set order in which people will get organs, it all depends on if you are closer to the organ than someone else. Although if you smoke or drink heavily then it might affect your spot on the list. Also it can depend on the seriousness of your need for an organ. Lungs can collapse, hearts can stop beating, livers and kidneys can fail. All of these will result in death, but since we have organ transplantation the number of deaths have decreased greatly. ("Information about Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation", n.d.) Limb loss can be caused by many things. Such as explosions, chainsaw accidents, loss of circulation, amputation, and many more. No one wants to live without a limb, so getting a hand, arm, leg, or foot transplant would help someone out immensely. ("Information about Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation", n.d.) Major blood loss can occur from major wound, a severed artery, or cut veins. This can be fixed with a blood transfusion. Major blood loss can be deadly because the human body needs blood to function. Blood transfusion is the option to fix this. This involves taking the blood from someone else who has a matching blood type and putting in your body. ("Information about Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation", n.d.) All of these problems are fixable because of the power of organ transplants. Everyone of these used to be fatal before organ transplantation was a common procedure.
