Should college athletes be paid?
Athletes, though hardly massively productive citizens of our workforce, earn more money than 99% of people who work within our workforce. People who work eight hour shifts for large companies could never hope to earn the millions of dollars that many athletes earn a year. The average person in America in 2016 made $51,539 according to Fox Business. This difference in salary causes the average high school graduate with athletic talent want to move past college as fast as possible. In Baseball, High School athletes can choose to skip college and enter the pros. These universities use the image of their star players in order to sell tickets to the games. The star players recieve nothing from this one sided relationship, meaning why should they work for free for a college? In the pros on the other hand, each athlete earn a fair amount, so all the money that the franchises earn is fair since they pay each of these types of players millions of dollars a year. They say that while injuries can be problematic, this is what they have signed up for when playing sports and just because there are injuries does not mean that the athletes deserves to be paid. There is also a major concern with the idea in terms of how much an athlete would deserve and how the college would find enough money to pay every student athlete. While these concerns are noted, these institutions are generating loads of money at present and it will soon reach that point where they will need to provide the athletes payment because they will be able to do this soon enough. Young athletes at the time also are not concerned specifically with their education because in their mind, they can come back later in life after their careers and finish their degrees.
