If colleges were to pay athletes there would be no fair way to distribute the money. Athletes perform their sport at different levels and for various lengths of time. In addition, not every player is able to compete or participate in a competition or game. Problems would arise about the athlete not having any playing time which would not allow him/her to receive the money he/she deserves. The first issue about this problem is that some people believe that athletes should be paid based on an open market system. This idea of an open market system would allow for supply and demand to come into play. Athletes play sports in college for two reasons: for the love of the game and for the chance to make it to the pros. If students were being paid to play a sport, college and university athletic departments would turn into enterprises or corporations. By paying college athletes business owners and agents would be able to profit off of the athletes that they are representing. The illegal activities or events that occur in professional sports would likely happen in college sports; if student athletes were being paid. For example, abuse of a person, animal or substance and even criminal activities involving a weapon all in things that occur in the pros. Students would start holding out on contracts because they want more money than what they were previously getting. Unions would emerge that would focus on the rights of college athletes. In addition, colleges would be watching to see if athletes are unhappy with how much the university is paying them. This would allow for them to make a deal with the unhappy athlete and have him or her play for their college. People watch college sports because they do not have these flaws or problems associated with them, and by paying athletes these problems would surface. Odell Beckham Jr. stated in an interview with ESPN about playing college football, “Football is my sanctuary. It's where I go to escape. It's where I'm most happy.” By playing sports in college, young boys and girls are being turned into men and women. The sport itself teaches students or athletes how to be disciplined and driven to succeed. Fans of the sport do not want to turn on to ESPN or any sports network of the week and see a football team, a basketball team, or any team protest or go on a strike at their university because the players do not like how much they are being paid.
