GMOs is the abbreviation of “Genetically Modified Organisms” and can be defined as living organisms which the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) be altered in a way that occurred non-naturally. GMOs can be created by either genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technology (World Health Organization, 2014). Nowadays, GMOs are mostly produced as food for humans.

There are a lot of debates all over the world that related to GMOs. One of the common claims is “The world needs more GMOs.” I support the claim that the world needs more GMOs because they are beneficial to human beings in different aspects.

Firstly, the use of GMOs can help to increase yield in order to feed on more population. The world population is blooming. The current world population is 7.2 billion and it is forecasted to reach 9.6 billion by 2050 (United Nation, 2013). More population means more demand on foods and crops. Besides, 55 countries are currently classified as Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2014). More than two-third of the countries are in Africa. In …show more content…

They claim that it is unnatural and immoral to alter the gene and DNA in organisms so that we should not do it. Actually, change in DNA is very common and occur spontaneously among living organisms. Approximately 120,000 mutated genes are created each time when one cell undergoes cell division (The University of Utah Health Sciences, n.d.). Many natural things in the environment, like radiation, cosmic rays, UV light and even foods can also change the DNA in organisms. The evolution processes proposed by Charles Darwin also based on changing of DNA in organisms as formation of new species required variation in DNA and genes. Therefore, it is nothing special to have DNA to be changed by humans because the DNA of every organism is not stable and always changing by other external factors without
