WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE? Child abuse is mistreatment from a parent or caregiver, through action or lack of action causing any death, emotional toll, injury and/or serious harm. These are categorized into four different forms Physical, Emotional, Sexual & Neglect.

TYPES OF ABUSE AND THE SIGN A PSW MAY SEE
Physical abuse is focused on a parent or caregiver purposefully causing physical injury to a child. Using items to harm a child to cause genuine harm is also considered physical abuse. (e.g. attacking, shaking, dropping, breaking bones, etc.). PSWs usually see this kind of practice in their career where parents insist that their actions are simply forms of discipline. including confinement, isolation, humiliation or any treatment that effect a sense of dignity. Such children are excessively withdrawn, fearful or anxious about doing wrong things. Usually, emotional abuse is a constant pattern leading to a damaged psych over time (e.g. Verbal insults, shaming or humiliation, threats, criticism, etc.). These children are not seen much attached to their caregiver or parents. Exposing a child to sexual situations or materials is sexually abusive. Sexual abuse contains the idea of an adult using a child for sexual purposes or acts (e.g. Rape, oral sex, any penetration, fondling, filming pornography, etc.). PSWs see many children tormented by shame and guilt and most of them are sexually abused. Such children feel that they are responsible for the abuse. Some signs that show sexual abuse, that a PSW can see is: o Displaying or doing an act of a sexual behavior that is inappropriate for his/her age o Showing signs of STD or pregnancy o Scared of older people o Feels uncomfortable when getting assisted with ADL o Avoids certain people without obvious reason
Neglect covers many different areas, mainly, Physical (supervision), emotional, medical and/or educational though basically, it’s when a caregiver does not give the supervision, support, affection or care needed to assist a child’s, safety & health. Child neglect is very common kind of abuse. In the event that the parental figure can't prove the child with its fundamental needs because of their financial situation, it isn't viewed as neglect, unless help has been offered and the parental figure refused the help. Some signs that show neglect, that a PSW can see is: o cloths are dirty, ripped or too small o Bad hygiene o Always sick, untreated issues and physical injuries o Always alone with no supervision o Always late it missing
