Psychology helps to explain human behaviour, which has always interested me. I find it fascinating how humans can react to the same stimulus differently. The way that we process information as humans also interests me and I am be fascinated by the way that we as humans form memories by rehearsal and transferring memories between different memory stores.
I remain positive and energetic because I always look forward to challenges in life. As ex professional athlete, I always set realistic targets and time scale for myself and others I teach. This method ensures that you concentrate on your targets and remain focused on tasks ahead step by step. I have a different way of training and teaching. I focus on psychology using mind over matter as I believe every person can do any given task.
It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.
I am studying a Psychology degree and this field I have chosen really interests me because I have a passion for helping people. Generally, I am that type of person to put other's happiness and well-being before my own, because it makes me feel like I have a sense of purpose. Also, since I was a little girl I have always been so fascinated with the way people interact, behave, think and feel. I always asked 'why?' and I still do to this very day.
I've never joined a program related to mental health, so I think this will be an amazing opportunity for me to pursue a career in mental health! I know some basics of psychology as an AP psychology student, but I hope this program will help guide me in the right direction for what specific path I wish to take. I'm also quite interested in your integrated support system, especially the workshops and college access planning! I wish to go to college, but I'm not quite sure where to go or the specifics of what to do- I really do believe this will give me the right opportunities to adjust and find the right college to suit me. I view this as a transition period from childhood to adulthood, and I'm excited to become part of a community of people
Personal Statement – Harvard University Clinical Psychology PhD Sitting at the dinner table when I was young, listening to my parents rattle off at each other in medical jargon, drove me crazy. I was too small to comprehend the terms they were using, so I started a journey to to understand them that has led me here, twenty-something years later. I was born to a world full of physicians. Almost everyone in my family is a physician, specializing in various areas.
Overall, clinical science is extremely interesting to me, especially because I plan to become a clinical psychologist, and understanding the most appropriate therapies for various disorders would allow me to treat patients as efficiently and effectively as possible. My own journey with anxiety began when I was just eleven years old. I began researching anxiety disorders in an effort to better understand myself, and the more I learned, the more I realized that I found it all very interesting. As I went deeper to learn about other
At 16 years old, I had no clue as to what career I would be heading into in the future and I was starting to get a bit worried. I was going to enter my junior year of high school and I needed to enter an alternative course on my course selection sheet, in case the AP Psychology would not have any room for me. I randomly selected Marketing Essentials, confidently thinking that I would definitely be in AP Psychology next year. Little did I know, AP Psychology was full of students and I ended up having Marketing Essentials on my schedule, a topic that I had no knowledge of.
I have been interested in psychology for as long as I can remember. I love the idea of being able to understand an individual by studying their behavior and thoughts. From the biological side to the social perspective, psychology feeds my curiosity and keeps me eager to learn more. To know why people act a certain way, or simply why I am the way that I am. Psychology excites me because it allows me to understand not only those around me, but also myself.
I chose to study about Phycology: Advances in Neuroscience. As I read about the brain and how the advances came about, I found it interesting how less than a few hundred years ago we new little to nothing about the brain. The theory of the brain was more emotional than it was physical, as shown by Aristotle’s viewpoint that the brain was, “as a refrigerator, cooling off the fiery heart. “ From there the scientist of the day began to look more closely at the brain and began to experiment to figure out what makes the brain tick. Since that time scientists have ever been in search of that very question.
My Personal Statement The moment when psychology peaked my interest was when I sat in my first therapy session for my eating disorder, which was bulimia, that I suffered during in high school for three years. This wounded healing experience was the motivation for me to take psychology in high school and not only did I earned an A+, but also, I earned a trophy for being the best student in that class from Immaculate La Salle. Not only, did I see winning that trophy as a physical sign to pursuit psychology as a career, but also, I saw it as an emotional sign to fully engage and invest myself into this self-less world of helping others. Then when it was time to begin my undergraduate studies, several traumatizing events transpired leading
Since I made the initial decision to pursue school psychology as a career I wanted to work in Chicago with students of color. Specifically, I want to work on the South or West sides of Chicago. Working in these students necessarily means addressing the traumas that students experiencing gun violence face on weekly basis. The evidence of the long-term detrimental effects of adverse childhood experiences have on a student’s life and their ability to learn is clear. And it is imperative to have more school-based professionals who understand these issues and who can work with students and their families.
I was once asked by my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. White, “What is research?”. To an eight year old, what did I know about research? I pondered this question, until I read a quote that I think best answers this question. “Research is seeing what everyone else has seen, but thinking what no one else has thought”. I truly believe that learning is a continuous process.
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
It's not a perfect fit for my personality, I might change my mind or something my happen along the years, but it is something I find extremely important and interesting. Some of the things I will need to become a psychologist I will still need to work on, such as reading more and becoming more involved in people's lives, but I believe that with some effort I can be a good professional one day. Another interest that relates to psychology is reading a lot and being interested in learning new things. This is something I’ve always liked, especially when it comes to subjects I care about. I’m hoping that doing extensive reading and research I can learn more about what a psychologist does exactly, how it helps people and how to be effective doing
