Major college football and basketball programs bring in millions of dollars a year for their university and the NCAA. Many people claim the players are the reason these programs make so much money and should be compensated for their work. At first this seems to be logical, but there are many flaws with paying athletes. However, athletes should be able to pursue business opportunities. College athletes should not be paid for playing sports, but should be able to have an outside income.
"Over the last decade, the debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid has intensified, and many athletes, as well as coaches, have begun to advocate for the cause." (TIMES) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should be paid. Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."
College athletes should be paid because colleges make money off of merchandise that people buy because of a college athlete, college athletes can support their families, and because their coaches get paid. According to the article by Gerencer,”... member schools make about $6 billion from ticket sales and merchandise sales to regular season games,” (Gerencer, 2016). People buy merchandise because of college students.
Have you ever thought that college players should be paid? I'm asking that question because college athletes are hard workers and should be diverse to be paid. College players put themselves at risk each game they play. College players also bring in a lot of money for the NCAA. College players devote most of their time to training.
Try to visualize that you are a college athlete, you would have a busy schedule. To start off your day, you wake up for an early morning practice. Following your early morning practice is all of your classes, that usually last all afternoon. After your classes are over, you finish your day with another practice that usually lasts until the end of the night. You now have to follow this schedule for six or seven days out of the week for the entire school year, sounds exhausting right?
Oftentimes when watching a sports program such as Sportscenter or Outside the Lines one question that is hotly debated is that of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Along with already receiving free college, paying these athletes would be very hard to control. Critics may ask; what sports get paid? who gets paid what? And how will school afford to pay these athletes?

Many teenagers, myself included, love to watch college football and March Madness with friends and family. Aside from college athletics, many people also watch the NBA (National Basketball Association) & NFL (National Football League), and these professional athletes make millions of dollars every single year.

Although some people think that college athletes should get paid for all the work they put into the sport for the school on their jersey. It is a big discussion since they are not pro-athletes and that only professionals should get paid. This may be a problem because of the schools tuition and not all schools would be able to pay the athletes.
The NCAA is a huge organization that includes hundreds and thousands of players, coaches, and staff. All of which play key parts in keeping in the organization running smoothly and efficiently. The players, coaches, and staff all are taking risks whether it is emotional or physical when they go to fulfill their obligations to their own respective universities. Coaches and other staff members receive a payment for they do however; the players do not receive payment for what they do. The NCAA has been in the “hot seat” when it comes to taking care of its players.

Professional athletes are paid millions of dollars to play a game while police officers, firefighters, army soldiers, and even the president are paid significantly less. “It’s not shocking that public servants like teachers and police officers make less than professional athletes”(Figueroa). Compensation shouldn't be about entertainment, it should be about job importance because people are trying to make the world a better and safer place not a more entertaining place.
Compensation for college athletes has always been a controversial topic on the minds of athletes. Even though many may say it is not right for college athletes to be paid, I think that is is fair for them to earn some money. The federal government should pay college athletes because of the amount of work they put in, the money they make for the NCAA, and the money that other team members make in comparison. College athletes devote more than 40 hours a week into practice. This means that they use about 24% of their week only on practice not including games and events.
College athletes spend hours a week practicing for their games; some people think the athletes should be paid, but they do not. College athletes practice and play their sport for at least two or three months; some sport seasons go even longer and the athletes aren’t paid for it. The NCAA (National College Athletic Association) makes millions a year so people think that the players should get a little of it. The athletes do it in hopes to go to the pros one day but if they do not it would be nice to have that money from playing in college. President Donald Trump stated in an interview that one of the biggest reasons these massacres are happening is because of the negative influence that video games, movies, and media is leaving on young adults. Trump's idea was to incorporate a new and improved rating system for video games and movies.

Many people have a dream to be famous athletes and movie star in the professional sport and film industry. Different people have a different point of view in sports and media industry. Some of the people think that it is one of easier job that all the people can do. However, actors and professional athletes overpaid have pros and cons.
