Compensation for college athletes has always been a controversial topic on the minds of athletes. Even though many may say it is not right for college athletes to be paid, I think that is is fair for them to earn some money. The federal government should pay college athletes because of the amount of work they put in, the money they make for the NCAA, and the money that other team members make in comparison. College athletes devote more than 40 hours a week into practice. This means that they use about 24% of their week only on practice not including games and events. This amount of practice can impact the school lives of athletes. This changes the whole aspect of “Student Athlete” to just an athlete. 40 hours a week can mean that there is no time for these athletes to get a job. They are giving up a job to pay for their student debts to play a sport for 0$ just like they did in high school. It is only fair for these college athletes to get paid more than nothing. The NCAA’s revenue goes up every year and it is not fair for these students who do not get paid for it. While the NCAA makes hundreds of millions of dollars, the student athletes do not get paid a single penny. This can be compared to a company not paying any money to any of their employees. If Nike did not pay any money to their employees, would that be fair? One of the biggest events part of the NCAA is the March Madness Tournament. This tournament alone creates 90% of the NCAA revenue. Even though these college basketball players make most of the NCAA’s money they do not get any of it.
