The glass castle has many themes throughout the book but I think one theme that is very prominent is: the perseverance to never give up. I say this because Jeannette goes through various things throughout her life. She faces hardships at a young age and yet still has the vigor to go on. Being caught on fire at three years old, being beat up at a new school by girls twice her size, having to eat margarine because that was literally the only thing to eat in the house, watching your parents put knives to each other's throats, or being locked in a basement for stopping her grandma from violating her brother, Jeannette never once looked at her life as sad or tragic.
“Always be closing.” This line is a common theme in the play and is the perfect description of masculinity. Based on the character’s speech masculinity is an important trait a salesman should embody and this can be achieved by them being effective and efficient in what they do. In the play and the movie the portrayal of masculinity is based solely, on their ability to sell land to potential leads.
However, I see some improvements in understanding of writing such as the words may mean a lot of different things; and the purpose of the author is to make the right impression to his/her reader, so to speak, to help the reader to interpret the point made correctly. I cannot stop thinking of the example of curtain. Indeed, if there were no curtains in the living room, it could mean the variety of possibilities. I must admit I have never thought of options in people's mind other than the most evident one. Another big progress I made in the semester is the ability to produce the massive volume research paper.
Since I take more pride in my writing ability it allows me to challenge myself and push my skill set. When we are given time to write a paper, I have began to write many drafts until I finally finish the perfect
Senior year of High school here at North Stafford my writing over the years has vastly improved through the accumulation of all my classes. Not only did my writing improve but also, my writing styles over the year has grown and matured for the better. I learned and understood for the first time how to use a document and properly cite it in my papers. Not only hot to cite it but where to find accurate and official sources as in books, encyclopedias, news articles, government papers, and online URLs. I have experienced over the year how to write a concise yet detailed paper within a few weeks.
A semester have passed in a blink of our eyes and we are heading toward the end. Therefore, it is time to reflect upon my writing skills. Earlier in the semester, I aimed for an A in this class and I also wish to become a more efficient writer. After finishing my letter addressed to Mr. Robison, I was asked to evaluate the process I used while writing this. In this essay I will be addressing specific questions that lead me to critique and analyze my piece of writing. These five questions to be specific, are a reflection of my growth, improvement that needs to be addressed, defining a revision process, and what I still have to learn. To begin with I would like to discuss what has changed since my first essay was written. For one, I've learned to cut words out and get to the point.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
1.) I feel like I am doing good in this course. I have completed my reading assignment and have been able to follow along with the lessons. My performance has been in account of the effort I put into the class. I have spent a lot of time revising my essays and referring to the course reading in order to make a good essay.
The writing project that I feel I learned the most was the letter I sent to President crow about my proposal of opening a puppy play pen in the library. With this project I learned how to put a business letter in a good format, as well as using explicit word choice and know when and how to use specific words. This skill is really important because appealing to the reader with exact word choice and make or break any deal thsat you have going on. Also the workshops and fastwrites during class also helped me a lot as well. The ones that helped the most were the fastwrites.
Over the this past semester in freshman composition I have learned how to write a college level paper. Going into this class, I was a little unsure and scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do the things that were required for me to do. As the semester passed I could definitely see a change in my writing. I learned how to use the appropriate punctuation, how to write and refute an argumentation paper, which I believe is my strongest piece of writing and how to research and gather information to write a strong research paper. I knew coming into this class that I was going to struggle with my punctuations, word choice, and the overall flow of the paper.
My learning experience in WRTG 101 has been an informative experience. It may be more accurate to say the experience has enlighten me with a few new understandings. My first revelation that I realized very early on is that writing is a perishable skill. I also had to learn that there is more to writing than proper grammar. For me at least, writing takes a lot of pre-planning in order to organize an effective paper.
The comments from my instructor, the online material, my research, the online writing center and comments from other students in the discussion boards have helped me so much to improve my writing skills. In the writing process, the step that I feel I have improved a lot is editing, as I am constantly reading my writings and editing them as I finish them, over and over again before I publish them. The steps in the writing process that I like the most are finding a topic in the Pre-writing step and Drafting. I like having a lot of ideas floating around and think about which idea is the best and the most exciting topic to talk about.
Writing project 3 has shown me the importance of writing something that is of interest for you, an issue that you are passionate about. I think that I have started to get somewhat better at the structuring of my writing and using outlines before I jump into a draft. I am no longer as scared and hesitant to write, as I was the first writing project. I think a good goal that I accomplished from this project was using diverse sources in my writing. I was able to utilize a magazine post, newspaper article and research journals to form my argument and provide support.
At first, I was slightly apprehensive about critiquing a fellow classmate’s written paper. The first thoughts that popped into my mind were, what if I give wrong advice on any corrections? What if my classmate gets offended by my comments? On the other hand, I had to make myself realize that the critiquing assignment was not about what was “wrong” or “correct” in their written work. However, it needed to be seen more as helping to make my classmate’s paper better.
