Throughout her essay, Ehrenreich continuously builds her focus with pathos in her use of parenthesis. Parenthesis is a form of hyperbaton that inserts whole words, phrases or sentences that function as an aside. With her use of parenthesis, she further clarifies and inserts her thoughts about the different aspects about her job. She criticizes how “Managers can sit--for hours at a time if they want” (pg 130). She wonders how many calories she burns doing the menial work she does to keep busy (pg 130).
I’m choosing the Service Learning Project and how it connects to the three articles. The Service Learning Project is going to talk to students are education and how its important for their future. In William Cronon’s Only Connect article is about freedom and growth in educations, and how students should have different opportunities and that they should have a say in what classes they take. Also why its important to have an education. This connects with the project that in my Service Learning Project I’m going to be talking to students about the importance of educations and how it should be your choice.
I think this reading, “Building Partnerships for Service Learning”, effectively sets up a framework to use as a tool in order to reflect on one’s own service work. While it does not tell you how to build partnerships, it instead gives benchmarks to describe what those relationships should look like. What most resonated with me is the important idea that service learning is not providing services on behalf of the community, but partnering with communities “to meet collective needs”. These relationships need to be collaborations, where they are equally beneficial for both the institution and the community around it. Universities should not go into communities with a savior complex, instead service should provide a learning opportunity for the
Emphasis was placed on the first few years conveying they are of critical importance for proper development. Freud communicated that we may become struck or fixed if we are not properly nurtured through a stage. Piaget (1896-1980) Piaget developed a developmental stage theory that included four-stages. He based it on the principle that children actively construct knowledge as they explore and manipulate the world around them.
The service project itself provides the opportunity to make a tangible impact in the community and apply what we've learned. It allows us to put theory into practice and develop important skills. However, being able to make connections between course concepts, personal values, and the service experience adds a deeper level of meaning and understanding. It helps us see the broader implications of our actions and fosters a sense of purpose and growth. In my opinion, the combination of "doing" the service project and making connections is what truly enhances the service learning experience.
For me, from the moment of the election of the Service Learning Project, I didn't like the simple fact of having to “work for free,” and the idea was transformed into a boring activity to do with the mere purpose of completing the project. However, as I started to help at the food pantry, I became aware of how wrong I was and my opinion about the social service changed, I realized how the simple fact of providing support to the most disadvantaged groups of society, was very
This stage starts from three years old to five years old. In this stage children are starting to learn by exploring the world around them on their own terms. In this stage it is likely children will learn new concepts from attending school or through observation. Children then are expected to apply these lessons they learned in school or witness to real life scenarios. Children often are aware they can accomplish these tasks on their own, but know if they fail to do so and end up asking for assistance from others, they may feel a sense of guilt.
The stages help me to solidify in my mind what might be going on in a person’s life at a given time. His stages fit with what I imagine each age group is grappling with psychologically at each stage. The two theories are alike in that they attempt to explain human behavior, but they approach it from 2 different schools of thinking. The two theories are like in that they both have a social context to them. I believe that both are valid, and both can help to explain why we do what we do.
Firstly, I have to agree with the importance of service learning as it contributes to a great experience in the way one can receive hands on experience, and apply their knowledge. However, this article strictly focuses on the benefits of service while not emphasizing the importance of how it is only effective if one takes it more serious then just a placement. In can only lead to great success if one actually puts in effort, and gives it they’re all. In terms of having a service learning opportunity one must be committed, open minded, and actually want to contribute in helping the community. In relation to my self, I am constantly counting down the days until I am back into my service learning experience as I enjoy being there and supporting the children.
You will learn how to become more organized and be able to plan out events that can have a whole community involved. Now lesson three wants to talk about how to conduct your presentation and possible ways to make known of your project to a group of individuals. There are certain types of services that are used for specific occasions. Direct service would deal with conducting face-to-face contact and providing help for others of; an example of direct service would be volunteering at a soup kitchen event where you are helping people that are homeless find a place to eat.
At three years old, Piaget argues a child is in the preoperational stage, which lasts from ages two to seven and is characterized by an ability to create mental representations of experience. During this stage, children may use objects, drawings, and language to show their ideas. Children
The second stage is between age of 2 to 6 years old, children form ideas with words and images, which is tend to be over generalizing. Developmental phenomena of this stage include pretending play, egocentrism and language development. And then the third stage from 7 to 11 years old, children think logically about concrete events and understand similar events. In this period, abilities of conversation and mathematical transformation get to be developed. Last stage, 12
Through the readings of the last week, I have learned a great deal about ‘Service Learning’. It is a combination of teaching and learning approach for teaching public health issues and improving health literacy. It is an integration of academic learning and community services to strengthen civic engagement. It is helpful in promoting cooperation, teamwork, civic responsibility, solving complex problems etc. (Service learning, 2016).
Through this service learning experience, I have learned a lot about developing children and how to apply my learning from N1I02 and N1J02 in terms of developmental considerations to help develop trust with my students and build relationships. The skill that I feel was developed the most through this placement was communication. I have always been above average with my communication skills, however, that was with people my own age, or with people who were older than me. I have not had as much experience communicating with people who are significantly younger than I am. It requires a different approach, and the ability to develop trust with the person before you can communicate effectively with them.
When I participated in some events, I had chances to work with adolescents. It was so much fun, and totally different from the environment that works with children. However, I realized that I prefer to work with young children because working with children need more parenting and teaching than working with adolescents. I can see how young children interact with their friends in new environments through such parenting and teaching. In addition, young children show us various characteristics depending on situation or peers.
