When students can do something for the community, it is always a positive. Helping the community with a project or activity gives the students a sense of belonging, and makes them feel like they matter. Creating a meaningful social change for my students is a priority. All students should be given similar opportunities to succeed and achieve regardless of their race or culture. I planned an event for my newcomer students that will make them feel that they are part of the community and their efforts are appreciated. The event I planned for my newcomer students is aligned with Walden University’s mission and vison for social change. When you look at the Richard W. During October's Glory Days of Service, Walden family, students, faculty, and alumni participated in community service events all over the globe and left their mark on society (Walden University, n.d.). My project that I planned for my class was something that would help the community, and leave a positive impact on my students and society. There is a community garden in town, where senior citizens can pay approximately 50.00 dollars a year, and plant a garden or have flower bed of their own that they manage. The garden is located in lower socioeconomic area town. I was asked my city representative if my students could take a field trip over to the garden during class time, and help with activities such as pulling weeds and preparing the garden and flowerbeds for the upcoming spring. I made up parent permission slips and a letter for students to bring home to their parent/guardian to explain what we would be doing during class time. Doing a community project like this brings everyone together regardless of race or culture. All students are making a positive contribution to society.
