Student A is a nine- year old English Language Leaner (ELL) attending the third grade and is in ESOL Level 3. She is currently reading on a first-grade level and is receiving reading intervention service. Her teacher has started the necessary process for the child's special education placement. The student seems to suffer from memory and expressive impairments. She was pleasant and cooperative during the assessment.
The meeting that I attended this week was Narcotics Anonymous (NA). NA is a fellowship that includes men and women who struggle with addiction. The members of the group are supporters or recovering addicts, and the purpose is to maintain complete abstinence (Narcotics Anonymous, 2017). Prior to attending the group, I was not informed about the group and was uncertain of what to be expected. Unfortunately, the night that I attended was not a traditional session, as they were celebrating the milestones of a few members.
From the ideas and techniques that Mrs. Perez used, I realized how these interviews could be helpful if utilized and applied in the proper way. To me, this assignment was the best and it helped me further my development and growth as a future mental health counselor. The most interesting and educative aspect of this interview was how Mrs. Perez applied most of the counseling techniques, such motivational stage that we have been taught in class. Aspects such as paraphrasing the words of your clients, tone, and facial expressions are critical in a counseling session and students always overlook these techniques. The way Mrs. Perez employed according to her explanation was excellent and her ideas justified the importance of such points in any counseling session.
This experience has taught me a few truths that I intend to incorporate in my future practice. My biggest realization was to learn that patients have amazing intuition when it comes to recognizing if a counselor is invested in a conversational and genuinely cares about patient’s well-being. Not being able to cope with certain situations in my life, turned to many problems and made it hard to live, happily. After receiving therapy with a certified psychologist for almost nine years, my outlook on life has completely transformed. Writing project 3 has shown me the importance of writing something that is of interest for you, an issue that you are passionate about. I think that I have started to get somewhat better at the structuring of my writing and using outlines before I jump into a draft. I am no longer as scared and hesitant to write, as I was the first writing project. I think a good goal that I accomplished from this project was using diverse sources in my writing. I was able to utilize a magazine post, newspaper article and research journals to form my argument and provide support.
