Juliet defies her parents’ expectations when the nurse informs her that Romeo will marry her at Friar Lawrence’s cell and she exclaims, “Hie to high fortune!” (2. 6. 83). Her enthusiasm is an indication of defiance since her parents want her to marry Paris. Later on in the play, Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence for help, since Capulet is forcing her to marry Paris, without knowing she is already married to Romeo. The Friar gives her a potion meant to make her sleep for forty-two hours.
The Nurse believes that Juliet is not fully grown to be married as she said “She’s not fourteen” (18). Her age has proven that she’s not mature enough to become a wife and indeed that she won’t be able to act or talk like an adult. And because at such young age, 13, it’s obvious to the maid of house Capulet to act innocent, especially in her response during the conversation about her marriage. Juliet replied to her mom obediently “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move” (Shakespeare 21) about the man that she’s going to marry without hesitation. She don’t even considered whether that man would be a good selection or not.
II. Comparison and Contrast: These two literary pieces are one of the saddest love stories in literature. In most romances, their love bloomed slowly and their love was truly above all and became the purpose of their lives, loving each other till their last breath. These two literary pieces are one of the best stories that I’d ever read, and it was so wonderful and breathtaking, reading this gave me a thrill of suspense, while thinking how to compare and contrast between the two literary pieces, the common is that both are all about love and tragedy. Romeo and Juliet is forbidden to fall in love because of their family having an ongoing feud, and had a love at first sight, they are expressing their love secretly and privately for their family
There are many ways an author or playwright can portray relationships in their works. One instance of such is William Shakespeare in his play Romeo and Juliet where he uses many techniques to do just so. Two techniques in particular that he uses are language and structure, through the means of the choice of words to display trust, length of dialogue and the choice of words to display other emotions. One technique that Shakespeare has used to portray relationships is the way that he formats his words to show trust. Trust is an extremely important factor in a good or healthy relationship.
Juliet gives the nurse a ring for Romeo to wear upon his arrival. The Capulet’s then discuss Juliet’s and Paris’ marriage that will take place later in the week. When Romeo and Juliet are lying in bed with one another in the morning the nurse arrives warning Juliet that her mother is on her way. Romeo descends from the balcony after saying his goodbyes and Lady Capulet enters with the news of Juliet’s wedding. Juliet becomes angry explaining how she much rather marry Romeo than Paris.
Before Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulets’ party, Shakespeare portrays him as a romantic, melancholic, and emotional young man involved in an unrequited relationship with another young women. When a fight between Capulets and Montagues in Act One, Scene One finally disperses, Benvolio claims his cousin did not participate in the quarrel, and Montague acknowledges his son’s sorrow and that he encloses himself in his room, yet he does not know why [1.1.135-145]. This implies that Romeo, unlike the other young men of the two conflicting families, favors pacifism and keeps his issues secret. Montague adds, “But he, [his] own affections’ counselor” [1.1.150]. Although, Lady Capulet does not make much effort to bond with Juliet since she is closest to Nurse. Lady Capulet also proves parents do not always know what's best for their children by telling Juliet to start thinking of marriage. She says, “Well, think of marriage now. Younger than you here in Verona, ladies of esteem, Are made already mothers.”. This quote shows that Lady Capulet wants Juliet to get married and become a mother now because that's the age that she had Juliet.
The Nurse tells Romeo that Juliet feels the same way and she wants to meet him. The next scene transitions over to the Capulet’s house. Capulet and Lady Capulet agree that they want Paris to marry Juliet on
Juliet told the Nurse about her love for Romeo and how they were going to get married against their parents wishes, and the Nurse helped her by going to talk to him about their wedding. She said “Is your man trustworthy? Did you never hear it said “Two can keep a secret if one doesn’t know it”?” (2.4 205-206). This reveals the Nurse’s loyalty to keeping Juliet’s secrets.
For instance, after Lady Capulet presents the idea of marrying Paris to Juliet and asks whether Juliet would consider Paris's love, Juliet passively responds, "I'll look to like, if looking liking move. / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly" (1.4.103-105). Juliet's response reveals her tentativeness to act for herself and portrays her meek obedience, as she strictly follows her mother's description of Paris and her suggestion to like Paris without deviating from what may be considered excessive. Her mention of getting her mother's approval before feeling deeper attraction to Paris further demonstrates her mindset of pleasing her parents, ignoring her wishes in the process. Juliet's ignorance prevents her from acknowledging her true desires and narrows her capabilities down to satisfying the wants of her parents.
At the beginning of the play, Juliet was hesitant about marriage. After her mother confronted her about the subject, she responded by saying, “It is an honour that I dream not of” (I.iii.70). Lady Capulet decided to throw a huge gala that night so that Juliet could meet Paris, a potential fiance, to change her mind about getting married. Juliet said in return, “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move;/
However, when Romeo talks with her and he explains his plans to marry Juliet, she goes along with it and acts as if the previous conversation did not happen. In the text, after talking with Romeo, the Nurse says “Good heart, and i’ faith I will tell her as much. Lord, Lord, she will be a joyful woman.” (II. IV.
How strong can a marriage be? What is essential for a successful marriage? The scene is in Italy in the 1590’s where women are bound for an arranged marriage. Although there wasn’t a say in the marriage, not all of them were successful. This could have been due to the emotional or mental qualities of the married women.
The Nurse shows her support for Juliet when she tells her where to meet Romeo. “Then hie you hence to Friar Lawrence’s cell. There stays a husband to make you a wife. Now comes the wanton blood up in your cheeks. They’ll be in scarlet straight at any news.
Lastly, Shakespeare uses Romeo and Juliet to show true love. Nurse shows parental love to Juliet throughout the play. Despite being a servant to the Capulet household, she has a role equivalent to that of Juliet’s mothers and regards Juliet as her own. Even with the fact that Nurse is not the birth mother of Juliet, she still treats Juliet like a daughter. Nurse cares about Juliet and wants her to be happy and find success.”
