Reviewed by: Sophie Michalowski “MUST. NOT. EAT.” Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is a novel about a 18 year old girl named Lia Overbrook. At the beginning of the story, Lia’s ex-bestfriend, Cassie, is found dead in a motel room. Her cause of death is bulimia. Bulimia is a disorder in which one overeats and then forces his or herself to vomit because he or she has an obsessive desire to lose weight. Lia also spirals into the depths of an eating disorder. She develops anorexia, a disorder in which one refuses to eat because he or she wants to lose weight. As the story advances, Cassie’s ghost appears to Lia and continuously tells her that she is fat. On top of that Lia struggles with her parents divorce, pressure to be a good role model for her younger sister and the guilt of not answering the 33 calls that Cassie left on her answering machine before she died. …show more content…
