The family of Luis Rodriguez, like many Mexican Americans in the border regions from the 1950’s to the 1960’s, faced much disparity in the social and economic realm of their new homes and communities. In their quests to lead a better life, the heads of many households had to work hard and long hours in order for the sustainment of their livelihood and in Luis Rodriguez’s case, both of his parents worked long and hard hours. Rodriguez’s parents wanted better for their family, but their journey to Los Angeles would forever change the trajectory of the life they envisioned for their family and, namely, for Luis Rodriguez. With Donald Trump being the Republican nominee for the presidential election I believe Diane Guerrero’s story can be connected to many aspects of today’s society. The racist comments that Donald Trump has said about Mexicans and how he says he wants to build a wall to stop people coming to the U.S is what evokes this feeling of fear into undocumented families everyday. This fear is the same fear that Diane went through everyday not knowing whether her family was going to be safe from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I wanted to know a bit more about Diane Guerrero’s life and how life was for her when her parents were deported to Columbia and I found an article named Op-Ed ‘ Orange is the New Black’ actress: My parents were deported , which mentions how Diane was basically by herself when her parents were deported.

Have you ever witnessed the time where you saw your loved one paying less attention to you and care more about what is happening in the outside world? Isn’t it one of the most upsetting moments you can feel when you see your relationship fade away? Richard Rodriguez wrote a short narrative describing the fade of care he experiences in a Christmas celebration with his family by using and memorable flashback, fur coat symbolism, thorough imagery, and rhetorical question. He first begins by flashbacking to the time when his siblings and him were little kids and their mother wanted them to be rich and successful when they grow up. Then he shifts the time to a Christmas (when they are all successful adults) where he sees everyone felt obligated to be there and they wanted to leave.
