Rome was a great world power during it’s time. Roman were always eager for bigger and greater things. But, with this lust for expansion and greater resources came fierce battles. Rome was a powerful nation, in which it crushed any opposition in its way for superiority. They proved themselves victorious in many battles and now wanted to conquer that of which was outside its outlying area.

So Rome set out to seek other territories to claim and the first place they arrived at was Carthage. The government in Carthage was similar in many ways to the Roman government, but what it lacked was the “incorporating of its subjects” into their state which did not provide them with a lot of loyal subjects. Their government was ruled a select few rich and privileged people. But, the one thing the Carthaginian government had over most, was that its army was commanded by and “able leader” and not a group of “civil magistrates”.

Many of the coastal cities captured by the Romans were lost and recovered back to the Carthaginians by their naval fleet. The Carthaginian navy made it very hard for Rome to send new troops in. Rome came to a crossroad where it had to decide to give up or meet the Carthaginians with a great navy of its own. So the Roman began to assemble a great naval fleet of their own based off the design of a wrecked Carthaginian vessel. The Romans built approximately a hundred ship to counter the Carthaginian naval threat and during this time when the ships were being built, they trained their army on how to properly row and maneuver their new fleet. They also built drawbridges in order to board the Carthaginian vessels. Now, with their new navy built up and soldiers trained, it was time for the Romans to show their military
