The story of Robin Hood is possibly one of the most famous English folklore stories of all time. He has made numerous appearances in everything including movies, plays, short stories, songs, books etc… it is truly hard to find someone who has not heard of the legend of Robin Hood. However, the story as all great things has greatly evolved since its “estimated creation roughly 800 years ago”; although many have chosen to stick to the original a few have wondered off the beaten path and into the unknown (History.com Staff). The story was always based on a young man with his band of Merry Men that would steal from the rich and give to the poor, because of this Robin Hood was always considered an outlaw who lived the majority of his life in secret. However, Ridley Scott thought it would ne necessary to reinvent the wheel except instead of improving its base of rock by chiseling it down to refine it he decided to start from scratch and decide that the wheel should be a square. The movie was so far fetched from the story it is based on that one must ask themselves why he even bothered calling it “Robin Hood” at all. For example, at the beginning of the movie Robin Hood is seen fighting for King Richard I during the Third Crusade “One more castle to sack, then we’re home to England” (Scott, Robin Hood). However, the truth is that the first reference to Robin Hood is only linked back to the “beginning of the 15th century” (History.com Staff). The ideas for linking Robin Hood and King Richard come from an author named John Major who released a book called “Historia Majoris Brittaniae” (1521), which relocated him in the late 1100s. It seems as if Ridley Scott chose to pick little bits of a variety of Robin Hood stories to create his movie.
