Working Title In a tragedy, the tragic hero is a literary technique that the author uses to help the audience feel better about themselves. While the tragic hero possess heroic qualities, they also possess a tragic flaw which causes their downfall and leads to their destruction. Ultimately, through catharsis, however, audiences are reminded of the redeeming qualities of humans. Three main theories of the tragic hero are the Aristotelian model, the Shakespearen model, and the modern tragic hero. Each model has five defining characteristics, which are nobility, hamartia, downfall, anagnorisis, and suffering. For example, Michael Jackson, known as a pop star celebrity, began his life as a common man before achieving high status in the eyes of many in society. To begin, Jackson was born to Katherine and Joseph Jackson on August 29th, 1958 in the city of Gary, Indiana (1). His parents devoted a strong connection with Jehovah's Witness which inspired Jacksons own career in music. In 1964, Jackson's Father formed a musical group for Michael Jackson and 4 of his other sons calling themselves the Jackson Five. In November 1969, The Jackson Five's first single “I Want You Back” went number one in the US “and sold two million copies in six weeks” (1). They continued to break millions of records from multiple singles and became one of the most popular bands in the 70s. “In 1971, Jackson released his first solo single “Got to be there” in 1971”(1). This was the start of Michaell Jackson’s solo career and he went on winning multiple grammys, selling out of all kinds of albums, having four top 10 singles, and winning three American music awards. After struggling for long periods of time with hurt and insecurity, Jackson took the painkillers as a last result. This unpurposeful addiction to the drugs and allegations of sexual molestation aimed at the pop star caused angry fans all over. (2). After a few hard long months of struggling with the addiction the star realized what he was doing and how he needed to take responsibility for it almost immediately. Jackson States, “My friends and doctors advised me to seek professional guidance immediately in order to eliminate what has become an addiction. It is time for me to acknowledge my need for treatment in order to regain my health” (2). He then proceeded to cancel his tour and become a member at a British Clinic for six to eight weeks (2). This drug addiction caused Michael Jackson a lot of mental and physical suffering. Not only was it affecting his physical and mental health he was as well as receiving hate from enraged fans all over the world. Jackson tried taking action to the situation by being honest with the fans to build back up his career and seek treatment. “ I know I can overcome the problem and will be stronger from the experience” (2).
