English Essay- Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare’s famous play is about two “star crossed lovers,” who will do anything to be able to wed, but their families are enemies, making their love seem impossible. After some confusion, Romeo takes his life, followed by a confused Juliet, who awoke from a deep sleep caused by a sleeping potion. This famous tragedy is a well-known classic, and is worldwide. Over the years, directors have created different versions to create social, cultural and historical ideas and topics based on today’s society and lifestyle. This is telling us that Juliet is a red, and Gnomeo is a blue. They live on 2b and not 2b Verona drive, which is the name of the place where the original play is set. Also, the address 2b and not 2b is a play on Shakespeare’s famous quote ‘to be or not to be.’ The pig with wings on top of the Montague’s home is a weather vane, referring to Shakespeare’s quote ‘when pigs fly.’ Later on, in the deserted home, the flamingo Featherstone says “a weed by any other name will still be a weed,” which is referencing “a rose by any other name will still be just as sweet,” which Juliet said in the famous balcony scene. The teapot truck, in the scene where a truck crashes, ‘killing’ Gnomeo, was named ‘Tempest Teapots,’ in reference to the Shakespeare play, the Tempest. Also, the flamingo’s previous home was located in Stratford upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare. This is just some of the many witty references and metaphors made throughout the film.
