Tragedy is something that causes pain and sorrow. It is something that makes a person reflect on what they have done. Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, the tragic play of two young adults who fall in love at first sight despite their families' hatred towards each other. They marry, hiding it from their families. Juliet’s cousin Tybalt has a strong hatred for the Montagues and challenges Romeo to a duel. Mercutio tries to protect Romeo but he is slain, thus Romeo avenges him by killing Tybalt. Romeo is banished and Juliet is forced to marry Paris. The two lovers would rather die than be separated, so the Friar makes a plan for them to be together, but it fails, leading to their deaths. Tybalt recognizes Romeo at the Capulet’s party, angered he tells Lord Capulet who then tells him to ignore Romeo since he has a good reputation. Tybalt, being hot-headed, disregarded what Lord Capulet said and sent Romeo a duel. Mercutio found out about the duel and tried to kill Tybalt before he killed Romeo. Tybalt slays Mercutio and Romeo, enraged, avenges Mercutio by killing Tybalt. The prince had stated if another brawl between the two families were to occur again, death would be upon the one who caused the fight. “Not Romeo, Prince. He was Mercutio’s friend;” “His fault concludes, but what the law should end, is the life of Tybalt. And for that offense immediately we do exile him hence.”(Shakespeare 341) Lord Montague tells the Prince that Romeo wouldn’t have killed Mercutio and was only avenging his friend’s death by killing Tybalt. The Prince decides since the law would’ve killed Tybalt anyway, he banishes Romeo. If Tybalt hadn’t killed Mercutio, Romeo wouldn’t have killed him and been banished from Verona, which caused a chain reaction to the tragic events. It is true that Tybalt only sent the duel because Romeo went to the Capulet’s party, however, if Tybalt had listened to Lord Capulet that Romeo seemed like a good person, two people wouldn’t have died. When Juliet found out about Romeo’s banishment, she cried in her room. Her parents believed she was upset about Tybalt’s death, and to cheer her up, they agreed to marry her in Paris. Not knowing she is in love with Romeo, her parents are angered by the fact she would rather marry Romeo than Paris. Juliet realizes she has no say in this marriage and she goes to the Friar for help. “And ere this hand by thee to Romeo’s sealed shall be the label to another deed or my heart’s treacherous revolt. Turn to another, this shall slay them both.” “If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake a thing like death to chide away this shame.” (Shakespeare 363) Juliet states that she would rather do suicide than give herself to another man than Romeo so the Friar makes a plan to fake her death. On the condition that Tybalt hadn’t died, Juliet wouldn’t be stuck marrying Paris and having to resort to “dying”. It is true that the Friar made the plan for her death, regardless, Tybalt’s death caused her parents to suddenly marry her off in Paris.
