The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by the famous playwright Shakespeare. The story takes place in Verona, where there is an intense feud between the Capulet and Montague. Despite this, Romeo of the Montagues and Juliet of the Capulets meet and fall in love. The tragic ending of the story is a result of the culmination of the actions of many different characters, and the very unfortunate circumstances that Romeo and Juliet are subjected to. Because of this, the question arises of who is most to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, or was it their own fault. Romeo’s death can be blamed on Mercutio, while Juliet’s death is a direct result of her parents’ actions and words. As a result of this Mercutio instead accepts the duel, and is fatally wounded. Romeo was banished from Verona by the Prince as a result of him avenging Mercutio’s death. If Mercutio had not accepted the duel, then neither him nor Tybalt would have died, giving the prince no reason for Romeo to be banished to Mantua in the first place. If Romeo had not been banished, then he and Juliet would be able to continue to see each other, and Romeo would not have a reason to poison himself. In addition to this, in act three, scene five, the Capulets tell Juliet that she is going to marry Paris in the next couple of days, because they perceive her grief to be sadness at Tybalt’s death. If Tybalt had not been killed because of Mercutio’s actions, then Juliet would have not been pushed into the marriage that she was not ready for. Also, even if Romeo was still banished, then the Friar would not be pushed to discover a plan to let Romeo and Juliet be together.
