Can people prevent their death or is it fate? We see this question presented in the novel Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is about two feuding families whose children fall in love. Right after Romeo and Juliet elope Juliet’s cousin Tybalt kills Romeo’s friend Mercutio so blinded by anger and the need for revenge Romeo kills Tybalt, so the prince banishes him. Juliet plans to fake her death to see Romeo again but when he gets there he drinks poison to die by her side. Juliet awakes and sees him dead so she kills herself because of how distraught she is. Fate is something that is destined to happen so no matter how hard one might try to stop something it will still happen. The death of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet is caused by her own choice. At the beginning of the story, we can see Juliet and Romeo start to fall in love, and we hear Juliet say to herself “Tis but thy name that is my enemy! What’s Montague? It is not hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!” (Shakespeare 47). Well, she may have been in love and not thinking clearly she was aware that Romeo was a Montague and her family's enemy.
