Romeo and Juliet: Relevance of Quarrels and Armistices. What factors contributed to the tragic ending of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet? Was it their overwhelming romance or the deep-rooted quarrel between their families? Romeo's mother was engaged to a Capulet and ran off with a Montague, creating a blood feud. The blood feud then resulted in the tragic fatalities of Romeo and Juliet. One main factor was Romeo and Juliet were initially supposed to be enemies due to the feud. This was a complication for them since they fell in love. As a result, Juliet tries to pursue Romeo into marriage, "O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name," (Acts II, Scene II, lines 33-34). This is significant because Juliet asked Romeo to go against his father, moreover, without the feud, it would not be necessary. Additionally, the Capulets wanted Juliet to marry Paris, however, Juliet loved Romeo who was a Montague. As a result of this, Juliet's only choice was to fake her death to show loyalty to Romeo and their marriage. "Ere this hand by thee to Romeo sealed, shall be the label to another deed, or my true heart with treacherous revolt to turn to another, this shall slay them both," (Act four, Scene One, Lines fifty-six through fifty-nine).
