Usually when someone awakens from a nightmare, they are washed with a wave of relief regardless of how frightening the dream may or may not have been. The Demogorgon from the hit television series Stranger Things or the gremlins, from the classic film Gremlins, are perfect examples of the creatures that lurk in the depths of your sleeping mind. Let's not forget everyone’s worst nightmare… exercise. Just consider the reality of running, all you are doing is pushing your body to the brink of exhaustion by running around in circles repeatedly with no actual destination all for the sole purpose of “exercise”. 20% to 40% of people who have schizophrenia attempt suicide. So why am I talking about a mental illness in a suicide debate topic? About 2-15% of people that have depression die by suicide, 2-30% of people with bipolar disorder die by suicide, about 6-15% of people who have schizophrenia die by suicide, the list goes on and on. There is no doubt that mental illnesses are linked to suicide, they literally go hand and hand with each other. One of the common myths about mental illnesses is that they are caused solely by a personal weakness, but the two actually have no direct correlation. Mental illnesses are caused by genetic, biological, social, and environmental factors. People who suffer from mental illness can be ignored, ridiculed, or even be accused of "faking”. Having suicidal thoughts due to a mental illness cannot be simply summed up as "being sad" or "going through a phase". Suicidal thoughts can lead to a real problem that can be triggered by mental illness, which is also a real world problem. The fact that people believe the inaccurate summarization of suicide and mental illness decreases the importance of the suicide to society. In some cases people may actually be going through a phase or faking to attract attention, but in many more cases suicidal thoughts can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, self-harm, and then the …show more content…

There are usually warning signals prior to a suicidal death and a way to prevent suicide is to recognize those signs and act quickly. Suicidal talk or threats are often taken as a joke and dismissed, so subsequently someone dies. Talking to a suicidal person can help them, even if it doesn't solve all that person's problems but it can provide relief and comfort for people. What does not help is telling things to people with suicidal thoughts like "other people have it worse". Dismissing their problems do not provide them with the proper treatment they require.
