In the article “School Fundraiser is Just ‘Junk-food Marketing to Kids,’ Experts Say” experts say written by Caitlin Dewey, a controversial topic about whether or not schools should use rewards programs was introduced. Rewards programs, such as Box Tops for Education, are programs that help raise funds for schools by the purchase of certain items with a special label of the event. At first, it sounds like a wonderful program. However, there are still downsides to these types of programs, downsides that can not be ignored. Schools should not promote the purchase of junk food in order to raise funds because it makes children have a positive relationship towards the fundraiser, the food sold do not meet the minimal nutrition standards, and it allows the children to have unhealthy food customs. In the article, it states, “It [researchers] found that two-thirds of the products bearing the Box Tops label do not meet federal nutrition requirements for sales in schools.” This proves that the food in the Box Tops fundraiser, and other fundraisers like this, should not be advertised due to the unhealthy quality of most of the foods. Additionally, too much of the junk food can cause health problems to the children, such as obesity. Another quote to further elaborate this reason is when the critics said, “But they do protest the nutritional quality of the foods in rewards programs…” This reveals that the critics question the nutritional values of the type of food sold in the rewards program. Likewise, if the children eat too much of the junk food, then health problems will arise in both the present and in the long run. All in all, schools should avoid using junk food in fundraisers due to the possibility of harming the children’s
