School start time and its effect on students has been an issue that many teachers and parents have argued over for many years. In districts all throughout the country, elementary, middle, and high schools start classes around different times, commonly making high schools begin their classes the earliest. Many teens will stay up late on their phones and end up going to bed at around 1:00AM which is very bad for your body. Electronics emit a certain glow that tells the brain to stay up and not sleep. Teens who are up late writing papers on computers or chatting with their friends are effectively creating an even more stimulating environment that will only keep them from being able to fall asleep when they want to. Waking up early in the morning is hated by many students. Almost every day students are waking up around six o'clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier. Kristen Knutson, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, says, “On school days adolescents are obtaining less sleep than they are thought to need, and the factor with the biggest impact is school start times.” Starting school at least an hour later would enable most teens to get at least an extra half hour of sleep each night, leading to an additional two and a half hours of sleep per week. Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day. However some positive effects can still come from waking up early in the morning and getting to school around the same time.
