Question 10. List some examples of sedimentary structures and explain why they are important to geologists to study. Answer: Some examples of sedimentary structures would be Planar bedding, Cross-beds and Fossils. Planar bedding is a horizontal layering that is the most common way to identify sedimentary rocks. The horizontal layering is mostly formed by water. Cross- beds are formed by avalanching sediments down the dunes. An example is rippling depending on the rippling geologists can tell which direction the water was going when the ripples formed. Fossils are the remains of organisms, that become fossilized. Fossils are the things that have been left behind by animals, plants or humans. They can tell what the conditions were when the fossil was fossilized. Sedimentary structures are important for geologists because each one is a clue that can be interpreted by geologists about the rock’s origin and history.

Gems like diamonds and rubies are mostly used for jewelry. Sedimentary rock types: Coal used for many things like heat and electricity. Halite or salt has many uses like table salt or the salt used to de-ice the roads. Gypsum is used for making drywall to make walls for homes and businesses. Limestone is used to make cement and many other things. Shale is used to make clay which is used to make bricks for building houses, fireplaces and many other things. Metamorphic rock types: Metals like copper, gold and silver each have their different uses. Copper is used in and to make many things like pipes. Gold is used to make jewelry. Marble is used for statues, counter-tops and many other things. Slate is used to make roof shingles, pool tables and other things. Talc is used for talcum powder, cosmetics, paints and
