In this assessment task, I took advantage of many of the feedback resources listed; as to get a clearer grasp of what skills I do obtain and which I’m yet to refine. After identifying my strengths and weaknesses in writing principles listed in the table; it is apparent that I require more assistance when writing at an academic level. It was through this feedback I learned my deficiencies comprised of poor or overuse of nominalisation and adjectives/adverbs. From this, I consulted the web for ideas on ways to revise and develop my knowledge to a more acceptable standard. A below average score and a suggestion to utilise a thesaurus on Paper Rater (www.paperrater.com) was duly noted and is a tool I would recommend to future students. Sentence length has been a task that I struggle with in academic writing, therefore by applying the use of nominalisation where appropriate, I can shorten my sentences; making them more condensed. By being aware of where to employ the use of nominalisations, I will be able to keep my writing at a level that is easily understood by readers and keep the context present. Additionally, improvements can be made in the organisation of clauses and proper use of commas and other punctuation marks. To successfully advance in these areas, I feel reading textbooks and other academic literature will be beneficial as well as taking part in writing and learning activities such as the discussion board on my universities website. Grammar is a principle that I was confident in prior to starting my studies. Throughout my writing tasks, I have learned a lot more about grammar and this assessment task has proved that there is still a lot to learn and refine.
