Sexual assault is a truly horrendous act that colleges should be trying to reduce by improving the security on the campus. Of course freedom plays a major role in college, however with how often these assaults happen, measures must be taken such as the increase of campus security. Increasing the amount of security officers will decrease opportunities of attacks and increase the chances of receiving help in the chance that a student is being sexually assaulted. Having security officers patrol the campus will also increase the safety of the campus as they will be able to notice any suspicious behavior and scare off any possible assailants. The only current problem with pepper spray is that “pepper spray may not be legal on all college campuses” (Monahan). Pepper spray should be allowed on all campuses as it is one of the most common self-defense items sold and can effectively help protect college students from sexual assault. Pepper spray is easy to use and does its job quite well as it will immediately immobilize the criminal due to the intense burning sensation where it is sprayed and temporary blindness that it causes if it gets in the eyes which causes enough of a distraction for the victim to fight back. While the criminal is predisposed with the pepper spray it will also give the victim time to get away and find help. Pepper spray may indirectly help catch the assailant as well because it can provide a way to distinguish them.
