Sexualized Images Of Women Essay

Whenever I turn on the television to look at different television shows, films, etc., I find it more common to see sexualized images of women than men. From commercial and magazine ads to music videos, the media are more likely to show women dressing provocative than men. I know it is mainly due to society has this perception that women are only “good” for showing off their bodies and being sexy. Then, there is the downside of women being sexually exploited on television, magazines, and social media, where they are deemed as being wild, provocative or “slutty”. However, today, when men are shown in magazines or commercial ads for modeling, revealing their chest area or posing in underwear to show their “sexiness”, there is not a social stigma for them as it is for women. It raises the question, “Why is it okay for men to be sexualized than it is for women?” Why is this being taught in our society?

(2013) explained how one way people are given certain tasks of society is based on their talents, motivations, and competence, meaning their demonstrated achievement (as cited in Lorber, 1994).
