On average, kids from kindergarten-12th miss 11% of the school year. This is a problem because kids who attend school consistently have a higher graduation rate and are more likely to find good jobs. A student who misses 10 days a year, on average, is 25% less likely to go to college. Also, students with middle school absences are more likely than others to drop out of high school. Shortening school days is the first step into making teens feel safer, improve their mental health, and do better in school overall. Having a shorter school day can help you find more success in tests and academics in general. It is proven that with shortened school days students improve and do better on their tests. In the article “Shorter School Days Increase Success” by Kayla Weise she writes about how countries with shorter school days have a higher success rate, “Norway was one country that scored higher than the US. However, their school hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. This shows that more time in school does not improve student success.” Many people think that if school days are shortened then students will lose time learning, however the attention span of the average teen 13-15 is only 30-40 minutes. Many schools have 50 minute or longer periods. Students can not focus for this long so, if periods are shortened to 30-40 minutes it will shorten the day and let teens focus while the lesson is taking place and not losing track. This will be more efficient because if students lose focus during those longer periods, they will not learn what is being taught. However, if students are taught in a 30-40 minute period, they are more likely to not lose focus and understand the lesson being taught. Students also need time to do other things outside of school like hobbies and activities while also doing homework. If they are given more time to do homework, it will allow them to focus more on their studies without having to worry about balancing their activities and school work. Another factor in allowing students to go better academically is allowing them to sleep. Lack of sleep makes it harder for students to pay attention, control their emotions, cause mental issues, and affect their problem solving. If school days are shortened, they will not need to stay up late studying and completing homework. This will allow them to get the minimum of 8-10 hours. If we look back at when Norway
